SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS
VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION WORK DONE, VOLUME TERMS
Trend estimates
- The trend estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done rose 0.5% in the September 2004 quarter. This is the fourteenth consecutive quarterly rise.
- The trend estimate for the value of work done for the private sector fell 2.6% in the September 2004 quarter, the second consecutive fall after a period of growth since the September quarter 2001. Work done for the public sector rose 3.5% in the September quarter.
Seasonally adjusted estimates
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done in the September 2004 quarter rose 1.4% to a record level of $6,908.4m.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of work done for the private sector fell 3.1%, to $3,719.6m, in the September 2004 quarter. The value of work done for the public sector rose 7.3%, to $3,188.8m.
Original estimates
- Following the record high of $7,228.2m recorded in the June quarter 2004, the value of work done fell 5.8% in the September 2004 quarter, to $6,810.4m.
- The value of work done for the private sector rose 0.7%, to $3,889.0m, in the September quarter 2004. Work done for the public sector fell 13.2%, to $2,921.4m, following a 26.2% rise in the June 2004 quarter.

SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS QUARTER
Compared with the estimates in original terms published in the previous issue of this publication:
- The March quarter 2004 estimates have been revised upwards by $1.5m for work commenced and $1.4m for work done.
- The June quarter 2004 estimates have been revised upwards by $98.6m for work commenced, $90.7m for work done and revised downward $33.1m for work yet to be done. The revised estimates for work commenced and work done were predominately due to revisions in 'other minerals' and 'other heavy industry'.

CHAIN VOLUME MEASURES - TREND ESTIMATES
NEW SOUTH WALES
The trend estimate for the value of work done has grown for ten consecutive quarters, with the rate of growth slowing in recent quarters.
VICTORIA
The trend estimate for the value of work done declined in the past two quarters after a period of growth since the September quarter 2001.
QUEENSLAND
After being in decline in the June and September quarters 2003, the trend estimate has shown growth over the past four quarters.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The trend estimate for work done increased marginally in the September 2004 quarter following four quarters of decline.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The trend estimate for the value of work done has shown an increase for the last three quarters following a period of decline in late 2003.
TASMANIA
The trend estimate for work done has shown an upward movement since December 2001.
NORTHERN TERRITORY
The trend estimate for the value of work done has moved into decline after a period of growth since the September quarter 2001.
AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
After three months of decline, the trend estimate for work done has increased for the past two quarters.
